Week 10 - Tim White - The Paralytic Man

Tim White, chaplain for Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus shares a reflection on the biblical story of the paralytic man found in Luke 5:17–26.

The story:

While Jesus was teaching, a large crowd gathered, preventing a group of men from bringing a paralyzed friend to him. Undeterred, the men went onto the roof and lowered the man down through the tiles directly in front of Jesus. Jesus acknowledged their faith and forgave the man's sins. When religious leaders questioned his authority to forgive sins, Jesus challenged them by asking which was easier: to forgive sins or to command a man to walk. To prove his authority, Jesus commanded the man to rise, pick up his bed, and walk; the man did so immediately, leaving everyone in awe.

Modern Application and Lessons:

Tim retells the story from the perspective of one of the friends involved to highlight several key takeaways:

  1. The Significance of Community Faith: Jesus healed the man based on the faith of his friends.

  2. The Responsibility to Others: This story invites reflection on who helped bring the listener to Christ, as well as who the listener might currently need to help bring to Christ through relationship-building or prayer.

  3. Simplicity of Approach: Jesus responds to simple faith rather than requiring complex religious systems or years of study to approach him.

  4. Transformation: The instruction to pick up his bed signified that the man did not need to return to his old life of begging. Jesus offers a new life, which the man was then free to pursue.
