Week 40 - Tim White - It Would Have Been Enough

Dayenu

Today, we’re going to talk about a Hebrew word - Dayenu. It translates to "it would have been enough" or "enough". This word comes from a song sung during the Passover Seder. If you watch The Chosen, you might recall hearing it during the episode featuring the Passover supper.

In the song, people remind themselves of everything God has done for them. The lyrics run through several powerful examples of gratitude, reflecting that each act of grace alone would have sufficed:

  • If He had brought us out of Egypt without judging the Egyptians, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not killed their firstborn, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not given us their money, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not split the Red Sea, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not drowned the enemies, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not supplied our needs for 40 years in the wilderness, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not given us the Torah, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not given us the temple, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not brought us into the land of Israel, it would have been enough.

We can apply this same mindset to our lives through a New Testament perspective.

Here’s my list:

  • If He had only forgiven all of my sins, it would have been enough.

  • If He had only taken the beating for me, it would have been enough.

  • If He had only died on the cross, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not given me God-honoring parents, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not spared my life from a serious accident, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not blessed me with three incredible kids, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not given me a God-fearing wife, it would have been enough.

  • If He had not made me a grandfather, it would have been enough.

Everyone's list will look different. I encourage you to take time to reflect on the undeserved blessings in your life and write down your own Dayenu list. When you spend time in prayer, read it to Him and share your deep gratitude for all He has given.

Remember, even if He never answered another prayer, what He has already done will always be more than enough.
