Our Own John Wayne

Hearing the name John Wayne can conjure up images of cattle, horses, and maybe a group of men driving the steer across an open prairie. The movie actor, John Wayne, of decades past, starred in many westerns that included those images.

You speak the name John Wayne around our campus and someone might just point you to the guy under the hood of a truck, our “John Wayne” Maroney. When you get to know John Wayne he also has a side of his life that is spent around cattle and horses.

In a recent conversation, John Wayne explained that being around cattle and horses has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. His grandfather raised cattle and from a very young age, John Wayne got to experience the dream of many boys by riding horses and driving cattle.

In the relationship with his grandfather, John Wayne learned much about the process of raising, marketing, and selling cattle. The grandfather also engrained in John Wayne the desire to be the best at whatever you do.

To improve at anything means seeking out resources and a knowledge base to help you gain a better understanding of what it means to succeed.

When it comes to cattle, John Wayne has taken that sentiment to heart and is a member of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association. And more recently has been asked to participate in the YOUNG CATTLEMEN’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. The organization and more specifically the program recognizes the need to cultivate future leaders in the association and the industry.

Persons selected for this program have to be nominated, show a desire to be a better cattleman and leader and be between the ages of 20 and 40

The three primary goals of the YOUNG CATTLEMEN’S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM are:

  • Provide participants with a "pasture to plate" experience of Alabama's beef industry

  • Equip participants with the tools necessary to become an effective leader and to share their beef story with their peers

  • Create a network of young cattlemen who the ACA can depend on to help with beef promotion and issues management as well as become industry leaders in the future
