Week 26 - Tim White - Finding Rest in a Busy World

Finding Rest in a Busy World

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of rest. In the world we live in today, it feels like we are constantly running all over the place and are perpetually busy.

I was recently reminded of a passage many of us grew up learning: Psalm 23. Verses 1 through 3 tell us:"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake."

When I think about those verses, I picture myself lying in a field of cool, green grass or sitting by a quiet lake. It is in these moments that He restores and refreshes our souls.

This also brings to mind Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God". The historical context of this verse is actually a battlefield where God silenced nations coming against the children of Israel. It was a song of confidence.

Interestingly, the Hebrew word for "be still" is raphah. It literally means:

  • To let go

  • To relax

  • To drop

  • To cease striving

When God tells us to be still, He is declaring His absolute sovereignty and control over our chaotic situations. To me, it feels like He is whispering, "Be still. I got this. You just need to be still and watch me work".

I want to encourage you in your daily walk to take some time to be still. Let Him restore your soul and lead you to those green pastures. Relax and remember that He is in control.

It is often much easier to say than it is to do, but I pray that we can all find that state of stillness that allows Him to restore us.
